Our Premium teas are grown, cared for, harvested, and processed by hand. Here's why we are different.
Okuma's WuLong Oolong Tea is exclusively grown on the hillsides of the Wuyi mountain range in the Fuijan Province of China at extremely high elevations over 7500 feet. No pesticides, GMO's, or chemicals used.
The top three to four leaves of new growth (within 60 days) from a tea plant provide the ideal raw material for making WuLong Oolong Tea. Picking the tea by hand is the best way to harvest this new growth, and is very labor intensive.
Once hand picked the enzymes inside the leaves immediately start a chemical reactions that ultimately create the flavor and aroma profile of the tea. Our Tea masters control these reactions by controlling how much moisture the tea leaves shed.
During this step, the cell walls of the tea leaves are broken down allowing more exposure to oxygen. With depleted moisture and exposure to air, the chemical reaction of oxidation occurs.
The name “Kill Green” comes from the Chinese term 殺青 (shaqing), which literally translates as “kill green”. This step deactivates the enzymes responsible for the oxidation process, thereby stopping the chemical transformation.
The rolling and drying process is repeated continuously for up to 12 hours. During each cycle, the leaves become more tightly rolled and drier. It is up to the experience of the tea maker, and the desired effect to determine when to stop the process.
Okuma's WuLong leaves are roasted repeatedly, which removes all the water content, transforming the flavor and consistency of the brewed tea. This is a significant factor in the making of our Premium Chinese Slimming Tea.
This final step involves the inspection from Our Master of Teas. Once approved, our fresh WuLong tea is packaged in separate hermetically sealed tea bags, boxed, and shipped directly to our warehouse in the USA.
